Sustainable aviation is one of the areas of increasing importance and a strong cooperation focus for the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB). Making use of their cooperation framework the EU-Japan Aviation Partnership Project (APP), the two authorities organised a workshop dedicated to Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) on 23 and 24 October. This event was hosted in Tokyo, and brought together the experts from the authorities as well as from the industry to provide for a comprehensive picture of the on-going developments supporting this promising option for reducing the carbon footprint of the aviation industry.

The workshop started on the first day with the discussion of legislation and policies’ contribution to SAF development in Europe and Japan. The second day was reserved for presentations diving deeper into the topics of SAF certification, SAF compatibility of aircraft and engine, sustainability certification developments in the EU and Japan, and outlook for SAF production and supply in both regions. In conclusion of the event, both the European and the Japanese representatives expressed their satisfaction with the productive and informative exchange, and agreed to continue cooperating on the SAF development subject in the near future.
